What we promise you
We collect only what we need.
We believe the best way to protect your privacy is to collect as little information as possible. We only collect what is necessary to provide and improve the Before You Forget experience.
We believe privacy should be easy to understand.
We have written this policy in plain language because you should always know what information is collected, why it is collected, and how it is used.
We do not read, listen, or analyze.
We do not read your journal entries, listen to your voice recordings, or analyze your photos for advertising purposes.
We do not follow you around.
We do not build advertising profiles about you or track your activity across other apps and websites.
What we do not collect
Before You Forget is intentionally designed to minimize data collection. We do not:
Where your memories are stored
Every photo, voice note, and written memory lives on your iPhone. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to turn on iCloud backup. Your content is stored:
We do not run servers that hold your memories. iCloud backup is opt-in, off by default, and syncs only to your own Apple account. Even with it on, we cannot see your content.
1. What we collect: almost nothing
Before You Forget is a private memory journal. The photos, voice recordings, written notes, names, birthdays, and everything else you put into the app are stored on your device. We do not operate servers that receive, store, or process your memories. We cannot see them, and neither can anyone else through us. The app contains no analytics, no advertising identifiers, no tracking, and no third-party data collection of any kind.
2. Your account
You can create an account with Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. Through either, we receive only what an account needs to exist: your email address (with Sign in with Apple you can hide it behind Apple’s private relay). It is used to sign you in and to send you receipts or service notices. It is never sold, shared, or used for marketing without your separate, explicit opt-in. Apple’s and Google’s own sign-in services are governed by their privacy policies.
3. Payments
Memberships are purchased through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes the payment; we never see or store your payment details. What we receive from Apple is the minimum needed to know your membership is active.
4. Backup and sync
If you turn on iCloud backup (a Premium feature), your memories sync to your own iCloud account through Apple’s private CloudKit database, protected by your Apple Account. They pass through no server of ours, and we cannot read them. Backup is off by default; nothing is uploaded until you turn it on, and you can turn it off at any time.
5. AI
None of your memories, not one photo, recording, or word you write, is ever sent to an AI model, ours or anyone’s, for any purpose. This is a product commitment, not a current-practices note.
6. Children
Before You Forget is made for parents and intended for adults 18 and over. Children do not use the app and no data is collected from them; the memories you record about your child are yours, stored on your device under everything above.
7. Your rights and your data
Because your memories live on your device, you already hold them. You can export your entire archive from Settings, and deleting the app deletes your local data. If you have an account, email us and we will delete it and everything attached to it. If you are in the EU, UK, California, or anywhere with a data-protection law: the practical answer to nearly every right those laws grant is that we do not have your data in the first place. For the little we do hold (an email address, if you made an account), write to us and we will access, correct, or erase it. You can also delete your account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete Account) or see beforeyouforget.ai/delete-account.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the effective date, and for anything meaningful we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. We will never quietly weaken the three promises.
